Bettina Equities - Affordable No Fee Apartments
I personally live in one of their apartments. I highly recommend that you stop by their office and pick up an updated list of their apartments. They have quite a few buildings on the upper east side and some others sprinkled throughout the city. Make sure you have good credit before going here!!! It is a little hard to qualify; however, it is worth the energy.

The affordability of their apartments is inversely proportional to their customer service. "Are you open?" I asked on a Saturday, she responded "No I'm home sleeping". They list the apartments that people have put in applications with the ones that are available. When you subtract the ones that have applications from the list, the list turns out to be three our four, that by the time you get the super to show them to you (task not for the faint of heart) they have already been applied for. They might be a good deal, but you have to be prepared to go through disrespectfull reps, unattending supers, no availabilities and good luck. If you have time and determination go for it, otherwise I wouldn't recommend them.
Can anybody tell how is it actually to live in the Bettina equity housing. I have found my initial contact with them simply abusive - for the first time ever in NY people were that rude (even by NY standards!). I also was a witness to an extremely rude conversation with an existing tenant. It really concerns me.Do they actually paint walls, refirbish floors, kitchen, bath before you move in. How are they in handling your inquiries if you have problems once you live there. It seems they almost feel that you are lucky they are talking to you and considering you for their housing.
Do they help when you have a regular maintenance problem, want to extend your lease or want to move out earlier than your lease? Do they provide any “customer service”?
I live in a Bettina building and you are spot on.. I guess price wins out and demand is greater than supply because if either of these things change, they will fall on their faces! I hope... The leasing office seems to do everything in their power to make things difficult. You would think you are doing them a favor by renting their place. Forget customer service and that does not change once you live here. That said, I have a great super who is very helpful and my place was clean (painted, floors polished, etc) when I moved in. We even were given new counter tops as Bettina is improving the units. We did not get the cabinets though. We had an old frost fridge and after a few complaints they agreed to put a modern fridge in place. Since the rent is low and does not increase too much yty, I am still here and moderately satisfied.. I say stick with it, once you are in, you will still dislike the company but live in relatively affordable housing and not have to deal with mgmt.
Never rent with Bettina. They are not only unprofessional in their customer service but also complete jerks when it comes to your money. If you've given them a deposit, better to just forget about it or prepare yourself for a long battle which you'll lose after being abused by them. They will illtreat you and keep all your deposit money. NEVER rent with Bettina
Bettina Equities is an "OK" landlord. By NYC standards they actually take pretty good care of their buildings and are fairly responsive once you are a paying tenant. As some others have noted here they certainly aren't excited about dealing with new tenants or potential tenants - but they get bomb-barded daily so its kind of understandable. All of Bettina's apartments along with thousands of other no-fee apartments are all listed on www.UrbanSherpaNY.com
